Chief Rabbi becomes Lord Jonathan Sacks

Chief Rabbi Becomes Lord Jonathan Sacks

Fri 17 Jul 14:00

Two new non-party-political peers recommended by the House of Lords Appointments Commission were announced today.

The two new peers are:

• Dame Nuala O’Loan, a former law lecturer and the first Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland (2000 -2007) and

• Sir Jonathan Sacks, Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth

They will sit on the crossbenches.

Chairman of the House of Lords Appointments Commission, Michael Jay said:

“The Commission is pleased to recommend two independent people of such high calibre to become members of the House of Lords. They have been appointed on merit following our published selection process - by which anyone can apply - and in line with the Commission’s recently revised criteria that requires a commitment to play a full and active role in the Upper House. “

SUJC wishes the Lord Sacks a hearty Mazaltov.
